Of late, many people are opting for
distance learning programs. Although distance education is not a new
concept, the recent dawn of Internet-based educational technologies
has created a boom in distance learning programs, wherein one can
pursue the course of his choice without interrupting his personal or
professional life and commitments.
A growing interest has been observed
in the online MBA programs. The array of options available in
distance MBA programs makes the prospect of distance learning all
the more appealing. The admissions procedure for the distance
education programs in MBA involves submission of GMAT scores, transcripts, and a sample essay to test writing skills. Sometimes, recommendations can also be asked for.
Most of these distance education
programs for MBA use a combination of online bulletin boards, and
document-sharing software to teach classes, and e-mails and chat
rooms to facilitate group interactions and teamwork. Just as in
regular MBA programs, team projects are very crucial and important
in distance education programs for MBA.
However, there are certain drawbacks
of a distance education program for MBA. In spite of the electronic
communication, students face problems due to the lack of personal
face to face contact and support from the faculty. Students begin to
feel increasingly isolated and the interest is not retained for
long. As a result of this, the drop out rate from the distance
education program is high. The main concern that experts and MBA
professionals share about distance education programs in MBA is the
increasing discrimination and inferiority with which the degree is
viewed in the job market. |
