Parenting A
Lifelong Commitment
Children can be obtained by giving
birth, adopting, fostering, surrogacy or step-parenting. Choosing to
become a parent is not an easy decision to make. Parenting is a
lifelong commitment that brings with it issues like responsibility
towards the child, changing priorities in day-to-day life,
understanding family relationships, re-defining values and life
ambitions. Many people live with the desire of becoming parents but
do not pay much attention towards other issues that are often
associated with parenting.
Becoming a parent can change one’s
life forever. Parents need to adapt to the situation so as to
balance emotional and physical needs of parenting. This is important
particularly for those who are “beginners” in parenting. As soon as
a member is added into the family, there will be tremendous increase
in the amount of physical workload. Another disadvantage of
parenting is compromising on several aspects that were once a part
and parcel of your personal life.
However, there are a lot of
advantages associated with parenting. Parenting is an experience
filled with invaluable treasures. It gives a sense of fulfillment,
pride and joy when a parent witnesses a child’s first smile, listens
to his/her child’s first words or becomes a spectator when his child
takes is first steps. Words cannot describe the experience when a
child feels secured, protected, loved and pampered by just clinging
to his/her mother or father. These are the elements that determine
the further development of traits or characters in a child. As
children grow from infants to toddlers, adolescents, teenagers and
adults, the responsibilities of the parents and parenting also
change accordingly. While parents have to just love their children
when they are infants or toddlers, they have to guide children
through the difficulties of life when they enter into adolescence.
While as adults, children expect their parents to be their friends
and to be there for them when the need arises. |
